The retail sector in Brazil has been making great strides in recent decades, going from revenue of R$224.3 billion to R$611.2 billion in 2021, a result that reflects 7.03% of the Brazilian World Domestic Product (GDP), being one of the most important sectors of the country's economy (ABRAS, 2022). Intense competition has been causing changes in the service offered by the sector, redefining traditional activities in order to attach characteristics of other formats or directing its activities to a more specific niche. This study aims to carry out a historical analysis of efficiency, from 2013 to 2022, of the retail chains listed in the 2022 ABRAS Ranking in the state of Rio de Janeiro, using the DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) calculation. Through the analysis, it was observed that establishing a single criterion of organizational and operational performance based only on revenue results does not reflect the relative efficiency of each retailer. The results showed that of the 21 retailers presented in the ranking, only eight showed maximum efficiency in the year 2022. Three of these were positioned after the tenth place in the ABRAS 2022 ranking.
